Researchers at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Hopkins and the Duke University Medical Center have recently discovered that mutations in two genes may be linked to gliomas, a rare but often fatal type of brain cancer. The genes, isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 gene and isocitrate dehydrogenase 2 (IDH1 and IDH2), are involved in the processing of sugar into energy for the cell.

Gliomas are malignant brain tumors that arise from glial (supporting) cells of the brain. Gliomas are often resistant to chemotherapy. These tumors grow fine extensions that infiltrate normal brain tissue and, in addition, individual tumor cells can form satellites in surrounding tissue. Therefore, it is almost impossible to remove the tumor tissue completely by surgery.
