Tourist arrested with loaded gun at September 11 memorial

photoNEW YORK (Reuters) - A tourist from Tennessee was arrested after she brought a loaded handgun to the National September 11 Memorial in her handbag, and she could face a possible prison term, authorities said on Thursday. Meredith Graves, 39, was trying to visit the New York City memorial on December 22 but was arrested when she told security officers that she had a gun, apparently thinking she could check it for safekeeping, authorities said. Security is tight at the memorial, located at the site of the World Trade Center towers destroyed in the attacks of September 11, 2001. ...

A Second Look at the Death Penalty

Susan Estrich - I still remember back in 1988 sitting in a Chinese restaurant when then-Governor Bill Clinton took a napkin and listed on one side the Democratic governors who were against the death penalty and, on the other, those who were for it. In its time, the issue was the third rail in American politics — the line that divided those who could win because they were considered tough on crime and those who would face electoral problems. A few years later, my friend Kathleen Brown was trounced in the governor's race in California in large part because she opposed the death penalty. Full Story

The Atlantic Wire - A man set off a brawl in a Sandusky, Ohio, bar last week after the other patrons booed him off the stage for being a terrible singer. Twenty-year-old Isiah Johnson stormed off the stage after other bar-goers heckled his singing peformance. Bouncer removed him from the bar, but he came back later and refused to leave. When patrons and bartenders tried to throw him out again, he punched three people in the face and cops were called.
