Kenya target 12 golds on London track

Reuters - LONDON (Reuters) - The Kenyan athletics team at the London Olympics is the best ever and can win 12 golds and 36 medals in all over the next two weeks, coach Julius Kirwa said on Wednesday. The East African nation enjoyed their best showing at an Olympics four years ago in Beijing with all of their 16 medals coming on the track, but only six of them were gold. The last nation to win 12 or more golds in the track and field competition at an Olympics was the United States, who won 13 on home soil at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Reuters - MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's new coach Fabio Capello called up 10 uncapped players and left out stalwarts Igor Semshov and Konstantin Zyryanov as his named his first squad on Wednesday. The Italian last week replaced Dutchman Dick Advocaat, whose tenure ended following Russia's disappointing Euro 2012 campaign when they were knocked out in the group stage. Reuters - CARDIFF (Reuters) - Egypt, who endured a torrid start to the Olympic men's soccer competition when they trailed 3-0 to Brazil in their opener, completed a remarkable recovery by reaching the quarter-finals with a 3-1 win over Belarus on Wednesday, Gold medal favourites Brazil completed their perfect run of three straight wins when they beat New Zealand 3-0 at St James' Park, Newcastle to seal first place in Group C ahead of Egypt.
