Memory issues after cancer may not be due to chemo

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women treated for breast cancer with radiation with or without chemotherapy had more thinking and memory problems a few years after their treatment ended than women who'd never had cancer, in a new study. Research has suggested some women experience mental haziness, dubbed "chemo brain," during and soon after chemotherapy treatment. And one recent study found evidence of changes in the activity of certain brain regions in women who'd undergone chemotherapy (see Reuters Health story of November 15, 2011). ... Full Story

Olympus preparing to file earnings by Wednesday

photoTOKYO (Reuters) - Olympus said it was preparing to file its July-September earnings by Wednesday, a necessary step for the disgraced 92-year-old firm to remain listed. The Japanese maker of cameras and endoscopes also said it would hold a briefing on Thursday to explain the results, after admitting to a $1.7 billion scheme to hide investment losses stretching back more than a decade. The scandal has put the company's future at risk. Even if Olympus meets the earnings deadline, the Tokyo Stock Exchange can still decide to delist Olympus depending on the scale of its past misreportings. ...

U.S.-listed firms told to reveal Syria, Iran links: FT

photoNEW YORK (Reuters) - At least a dozen U.S.-listed companies have been told by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to disclose business activity in and with Syria, Iran and others deemed "state sponsors" of terror by the state department, the Financial Times said on Sunday. The inquiries are part of SEC reviews of companies' investment risks to security holders. Sony Corp, Caterpillar Inc, American Express, Aecom Technology, Iridex and Veolia Environnement are among the companies that received letters from the SEC's corporate finance division, the report said. ...

Ariad leukemia drug helps 47 percent of patient: study

Reuters - SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - Early results from a pivotal trial of Ariad Pharmaceuticals Inc's experimental leukemia drug ponatinib show it is effective in nearly half of patients who had stopped responding to currently available drugs. An interim look at the study, presented here at a meeting of the American Society of Hematology, shows that 47 percent of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients with chronic-phase disease had a major response to ponatinib, meaning that at least two-thirds of their bone marrow was normal. ... "There is an increasing trend towards cost-cutting on medicines, so the debt crisis is pressuring our margins," Dekkers told Tagesspiegel newspaper in a interview released ahead of publication on Monday. Pharmacyclics' blood cancer drug responses rise

Reuters - SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - Interim results from an early stage trial of Pharmacyclics Inc's experimental blood cancer drug show the number of leukemia patients responding to the medicine has increased over time. At 10 months follow-up, 70 percent of patients treated with the lower dose of the drug, known as PCI-32756, had a significant improvement in their condition. Leukemia drug pulled from U.S. sparks new interest

Reuters - SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - A new study of leukemia drug Mylotarg, pulled from the U.S. market last year due to safety concerns, found it to be effective when used at low doses in older adults but questions about toxicity remain. Pfizer Inc voluntarily halted U.S. sales of Mylotarg, also known as gemtuzumab, after a study showed that adding it to chemotherapy did not extend survival for patients with previously untreated acute myeloid leukemia (AML), an aggressive bone marrow cancer.
