CNN Breaking News

The Senate Friday morning gave final approval to a large fiscal package that would prevent a U.S. default next week and lower the risk of a government shutdown in December.

The bill now goes to President Barack Obama, who is expected to sign it. The vote was 64 to 35.

The budget increases federal spending on defense and domestic programs more than $80 billion for the next two years and suspends the nation's debt limit through March 2017.

The measure had broad support from Democrats but limited support from Republicans, many of whom complained that the deal, brokered by bipartisan congressional leaders, contained too much spending.
