CNN Breaking News

Rep. Paul Ryan has been officially elected the 54th U.S. House speaker after a vote by the full House of Representatives. He succeeds John Boehner to become one of the most powerful Republicans in the nation and next in line after the vice president for the presidency.

The vote was largely a formality after House Republicans voted Wednesday to nominate Ryan, with 200 GOP members backing him over Rep. Daniel Webster. But even some conservatives who did not support Ryan say that after weeks of infighting, they are eager to move on and give Ryan space to unite the party's various factions and craft a legislative agenda.
