Historic Hurricane Matthew is stalking Florida's east coast early Friday.
Here's what you need to know:
- The western eyewall of Hurricane Matthew is now just 5 miles off the Florida coast nearing Cape Canaveral
- The hurricane has been downgraded to a Category 3 with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph
- Forecasters predict storm surge in some areas could be as high as 11 feet and as many as 15 inches of rain could fall
- Florida Power & Light reports 307,250 customers are without power
- The National Weather Service warned that some places could be uninhabitable for weeks or months. The effects of the storm will be unlike any hurricane in decades, it said
- At least 269 have died in the Caribbean, officials said -- most of whom died in Haiti
