Roche Q1 sales flat as Illumina bid battle rages

Reuters - ZURICH (Reuters) - Roche Holding AG sought on Thursday to persuade Illumina to discuss its $6.7 billion bid for the genetics firm as a rebound for its key cancer drug Avastin helped the Swiss drugmaker post solid first-quarter sales. Roche, the world's largest maker of cancer drugs, said first-quarter sales fell 1 percent to 11.03 billion Swiss francs ($12.05 billion), but rose 2 percent at constant exchange rates, meeting the average analyst forecast in a Reuters poll. The logo of Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche is seen at the company's headquarters in Basel(Reuters) - Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding AG, in a letter to Illumina Inc shareholders, called its sweetened $51-a-share offer for the maker of genetic analysis equipment "a more than reasonable starting point for negotiations." The latest salvo in Roche's repeatedly rebuffed efforts to buy Illumina comes a week ahead of Illumina's shareholder meeting and suggests Roche is willing to raise its offer. McKesson wins new two-year Veterans Affairs contract

Reuters - (Reuters) - Pharmaceutical wholesaler McKesson Corp on Wednesday said it was selected by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to continue as the VA's prime pharmaceutical supplier for at least two more years. News of the contract, which includes options for up to three two-year extensions, sent shares of McKesson up more than 4 percent in after hours trading. The new agreement, valued by the VA at over $31.6 billion, calls for McKesson to supply all of the VA's more than 700 medical centers and outpatient clinics, as well as its seven consolidated mail outpatient pharmacies. ... Family planning group sues over exclusion from Texas program

Reuters - AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Planned Parenthood filed a federal lawsuit on Wednesday seeking to stop enforcement of a new Texas rule that excludes the family planning organization from a program that provides cancer screenings, birth control and other health services to low-income women in the state. The lawsuit filed by a group of Planned Parenthood clinics that do not provide abortions says the rule is unconstitutional and that it will lead to tens of thousands of women being unable to get preventive healthcare from their chosen provider. ... Dental x-rays linked to common brain tumor

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A new study suggests people who had certain kinds of dental X-rays in the past may be at an increased risk for meningioma, the most commonly diagnosed brain tumor in the U.S. The findings cannot prove that radiation from the imaging caused the tumors, and the results are based on people who were likely exposed to higher levels of radiation during dental X-rays than most are today. U.S. seeks voluntary antibiotic limits in livestock

To match Feature CATTLE-RUSTLING/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. regulators on Wednesday urged food producers to voluntarily stop using antibiotics in livestock for non-medical uses as part of a broad effort to prevent the rise of drug-resistant "superbugs." The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said antibiotics should only be used under the supervision of a veterinarian to prevent or treat illnesses in animals. It asked companies to start phasing out the use of antibiotics for non-medical purposes such as promoting growth, and said that process could take three years. ...

Argentine hospital blamed after "dead" baby found alive

Reuters - BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - A mother whose newborn baby was found alive in an Argentine morgue 12 hours after being declared dead on Wednesday blamed hospital negligence for the near-fatal mistake. Doctors told Analia Bouter that her baby was stillborn when she gave birth in Argentina's northern Chaco province on April 3. But when she and her husband pried open the coffin inside the refrigerated morgue, they found the baby breathing. "We knelt down and thanked God for this miracle," Bouter told reporters. Ohio man charged after six puppies found in suitcase

English Bulldog puppies play at the Toledo Area Humane Society in Maumee OhioCLEVELAND (Reuters) - An Ohio man has been charged with animal abandonment after a litter of six English bulldog puppies was found in a suitcase with a tag bearing his name, according to Humane Society authorities. Cyndi Condit, spokeswoman for the Toledo Area Humane Society told Reuters Wednesday that the man, identified as Howard Davis of Toledo, lived only two blocks from where the suitcase was found. Quest Diagnostics names Rusckowski as CEO

Reuters - (Reuters) - Quest Diagnostics Inc has named Stephen Rusckowski to succeed Surya Mohapatra as president and chief executive officer at the maker of medical testing equipment, effective May 1. Rusckowski, 54, is currently CEO of Philips Healthcare, the largest unit of Koninklijke Philips Electronics NV. He will also become a member of Quest's board of directors, the company said on Wednesday. Quest also announced that Daniel Stanzione, currently its lead independent director, will become non-executive chairman of the board, also on May 1. Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - An organ donation video people can watch on an iPod while they wait at the Department of Motor Vehicles may encourage more to become donors, a new study suggests. Researchers found that for folks getting a driver's license in their county, the iPod video seemed to sway the decision on becoming an organ donor. Of people who saw it, 84 percent consented to be a donor, versus 72 percent of those who didn't watch the video. ... Full Story

J&J hit with $1.1 billion Risperdal penalty in Arkansas

Reuters - (Reuters) - An Arkansas state judge has ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay a $1.1 billion penalty after a jury found the company guilty of using fraudulent tactics to sell its Risperdal anti-psychotic medicine. Arkansas sued the diversified healthcare company, saying it had deceived thousands of doctors in the state by touting the one-time blockbuster medicine as better and safer than rival therapies and marketing it for unapproved uses in children and the elderly. Activity lower than hoped after knee replacement

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - After recovering from knee replacement surgery, patients' physical activity levels with their new joint were significantly lower than what they expected going in, in a new survey. "My take is that total knee replacement is primarily for pain relief, it's not a lifestyle intervention," said Ewa Roos, an osteoarthritis researcher from the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, who wasn't involved in the study.
