Nebraska governor rejects prenatal care funding for illegal immigrants
Fri,13 Apr 2012 04:25 PM PDT
Reuters -

Obama listens to remarks by Heineman to speak before a National Governors Association dinner at the White House in Washington(Reuters) - Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman vetoed a proposal to restore Medicaid-funded prenatal care for illegal immigrants on Friday, but the initiative could still survive if the state legislature rejects his move next week. Nebraska state senators voted 31-15 on Wednesday to restore the program, which was eliminated two years ago after providing prenatal care for decades. The number of votes in favor was one more than would be needed to override the veto and the Nebraska legislature has one day left in its current session -- next Wednesday -- in which to do so. ...

Some of the ideas might sound like "Robo-Granny". An astronautical engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has made a skin-tight undersuit equipped with sensors that can constantly monitor the vital signs of its elderly wearer and feed the data into a computer that fires off health alerts. It was first designed for a landing on Mars. ...

Fri,13 Apr 2012 03:19 PM PDT
Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A new study from Thailand suggests that extracts from turmeric spice, known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, may help ward off heart attacks in people who've had recent bypass surgery. During bypass surgery the heart muscle can be damaged from prolonged lack of blood flow, increasing patients' risk of heart attack. The new findings suggest that curcumins -- the yellow pigment in turmeric -- may be able to ease those risks when added to traditional drug treatment. ... Full Story

Fri,13 Apr 2012 02:06 PM PDT
Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - In a new study, the impressions of breast cancer patients about the quality of care they received often differed from medical definitions of quality -- in part because the patients were judging their experiences by a different set of standards. Patient perceptions are increasingly important to hospitals and other healthcare providers that find their payments from insurers and the government tied to performance and patient evaluations. ... Mom's caffeine not linked to infant sleep problems
Fri,13 Apr 2012 10:54 AM PDT
Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A baby's sleep may not suffer just because her mom likes a daily cup of coffee, a new study suggests. The findings, experts say, don't give the OK to heavy caffeine intake during pregnancy or breastfeeding. But they are in line with research suggesting that moderate amounts of caffeine may not pose a danger. Small studies over the years have come to mixed conclusions on whether caffeine during pregnancy was linked to increased risks of miscarriage or premature birth. But more recently, larger studies have failed to show any heightened risk. ... Full Story
