Australia settles patent suit in U.S. wi-fi case

Reuters - CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australia's scientific research agency has reached a multi-million dollar out-of-court settlement in the United States over the use of its wireless internet technology which underpins wi-fi platforms worldwide. The government-run Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) said the settlement for the Wireless local area networking (WLAN) patent was worth more than A$220 million ($229 million). ... Reuters -  BOAO, China (Reuters) - Foxconn Technology Group will keep on increasing worker salaries in China and cutting the hours of work, Chairman Terry Gou said on Sunday, after it came under fire for poor working conditions for employees making Apple iPhones and iPads. Chatter may boost Salesforce.com products: Barron's

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters) - Chatter, Salesforce.com Inc's social networking product for the workplace that customers usually get for free, could help boost Salesforce's top line, as an entryway for the sales automation software company to sell its other products and services, according to an article in Barron's. Currently, there are about 150,000 Chatter networks, bundled for free with the company's other products, according to Barron's April 2 edition. Reuters - SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Chinese authorities shut 16 websites and detained six people accused of spreading rumors of unusual military vehicle movements in Beijing, state media reported, after the political downfall of one of the ruling communist party's senior leaders. Authorities closed the websites for spreading rumors of "military vehicles entering Beijing and something wrong going on in Beijing," Xinhua news agency said late on Friday, citing a spokesman with the State Internet Information Office (SIIO). ... E-books settlement talks advancing: sources

Reuters - WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Justice Department could reach a settlement in the next few weeks with Apple Inc and some of the major publishers suspected of colluding to push up electronic book prices, according to two people close to the negotiations. While negotiations are still fluid, the settlement is expected to eliminate Apple's so-called "most favored nation" status, which had prevented the publishers from selling lower-priced e-books through rival retailers such as Amazon.com Inc or Barnes & Noble Inc , the people said. ... Reuters - BRUSSELS (Reuters) - EU antitrust regulators may open an investigation into a patent dispute between Apple Inc , Microsoft Corp and Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc to ensure patent holders do not thwart rivals, the EU's antitrust chief said on Friday. Last month Microsoft took its case to the European Commission, saying Motorola Mobility was charging too much for use of its patents in Microsoft products. Reuters -  SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc will begin layoffs of thousands of employees next week and will announce a plan to restructure the company the week after that, according to a media report. Yahoo declined to comment. The layoffs, which will not take place all at once, will mostly affect Yahoo's product, research and marketing groups, according to the report in the blog AllThingsD, which cited anonymous sources.
