Breaking News

Nine detainees at the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, are being transferred to Saudi Arabia, the Pentagon says.

President Barack Obama in February sent Congress a plan to close the facility. The plan faces objections from Republicans and legal obstacles to transferring Guantanamo detainees to U.S. prisons.

Obama’s blueprint involves transferring the bulk of the remaining detainees to other countries and moving the rest -- who can't be transferred abroad because they're deemed too dangerous -- to an as-yet-undetermined detention facility in the United States.

U.S. officials say closing Gitmo would save between $65 million and $85 million a year.
