They slugged it out all afternoon with no sign of yielding, but Henrik Stenson landed two huge blows to clinch his first major title in magnificent joust for the Claret Jug.

The 40-year-old Swede became the first Scandinavian man to win a major championship with a three-shot victory over America's Phil Mickelson in the 145th British Open at Royal Troon Sunday.

Stenson, the world No. 6, broke the deadlock by sinking long birdie putts at the 14th and 15th and added two more in the final three holes to card a major record-equalling 63. His final score of 20 under broke Tiger Woods's Open scoring record of 19 under, set in 2000.
