President Barack Obama said at a memorial service that the five police officers gunned down in Dallas last week didn't die in vain.

"I believe our sorrow can make us a better country. I believe our righteous anger can be transformed into more justice and more peace," Obama said.

In his remarks, former President George W. Bush also called for unity.

"None of us were prepared or could be prepared for an ambush by hatred and malice. The shock of this evil still has not faded," Bush said. "To renew our unity, we only need to remember our values."
