Screen shot 2012-11-28 at 10.41.25 PMRestaurants are kind of notorious for having painful web experiences -- either with websites that are horribly basic and out of date, or needlessly souped up with music and Flash animation. So it was good news today when web publishing stalwart WordPress.com rolled out a new set of templates specifically aimed at helping restaurants build clean, useful websites that can be easily accessed from both desktop and mobile devices.

In part, that started with the release of its iPad app in March. This week, Khan Academy brought its 3,600 videos to the iPhone.

When Marketing, PR And Technology Collide: Why Is PeopleBrowsr Going After Twitter, Exactly? Top
276131991_1ace023aab_zSo, this was bound to happen. A company that built itself on top of someone else's data lost access to it. And sued. I was sucked into the ploy at first, the whole "Klout but better for the people!" thing.

Twitter's Response To PeopleBrowsr Lawsuit: 'This Is Contracts 101′ Top
twitter-bird-calloutWhen the news broke earlier this evening that PeopleBrowsr had won a temporary restraining order protecting its access to Twitter's firehose of data, Twitter provided a terse response saying that it plans to "vigorously defend" itself in the broader legal case. Now the company has given me its actual filing in response to PeopleBrowsr — technically, the filing focuses on the restraining order (an issue on which Twitter lost), but it also lays out the other side of the story, and some of Twitter's broader arguments.

The Story Of Adku, And Why Andrew Mason Isn't The Problem At Groupon Top
FallguytitlescreenIn February of this year, Groupon acquired Adku, an e-commerce data targeting startup staffed with a whip-smart team that included several relatively prominent ex-Googlers. It was one of a series of acqui-hire deals Groupon executed as part of its strategy to staff up its Silicon Valley office with the best engineers money can buy.

Court Temporarily Protects PeopleBrowsr Access To Twitter Firehose, Twitter Says It Will 'Vigorously Defend' Itself Top
PeopleBrowsr-logoPeopleBrowsr, the maker of social analytics tools such as Kred, has won a temporary restraining order against Twitter, allowing the company to maintain full access to Twitter's firehose of data. The victory for PeopleBrowsr is short-term, but it does mean that the company won't be cut off on November 30, which is what PeopleBrowsr says Twitter was threatening. Temporary restraining orders are usually granted until the court is ready to decide on a preliminary injunction (which would last until the case is decided). The hearing to discuss the injunction is scheduled for January 8.

Tablets and iPads offer students a more portable, engaging and interactive experience than many of the tools of old, and schools are catching on. The San Diego School District's recent purchase of 26,000 iPads is just one of many recent examples of districts and states pushing to deploy tablets in their schools.

SRI's Norman Winarsky Says Siri Has Been Stretched 'Beyond Its Initial Capabilities' (But It's Not Apple's Fault) Top
siri_icon_lgNorman Winarsky, vice president of SRI Ventures, offered his thoughts today on how Apple has handled the acquisition and subsequent relaunch of Siri as an integrated service in iOS. He was diplomatic about some of the criticism Siri has received, while also acknowledging the service has some real shortcomings. For those of you not familiar with Siri's history, the startup actually spun out of SRI, andit was based on technology developed there, and Winarsky was on Siri's board of directors. So when Winarsky answered questions from reporters this afternoon at Bloomberg's San Francisco office, it was inevitable that someone would ask about what Apple has done with the technology.
