Google Loves This Third Party Instant Street View Search App, Will They Buy It? Top
1808636450_1001d8027d_zWhen I spoke with one of the leads on Google search a while back, he told me that one of the biggest features to come along for the company was "instant search" and autocomplete. Basically, you didn't have to type out a whole search string before performing said search, which required more thought and brain power. Now when you go to Google, you can type a few letters and it will try and predict what you're looking for based on a number of factors. What if Google Maps worked like this? Today, on its Geo Developers blog, the team highlighted a service that has built it, and it's quite cool.

Screen Shot 2012-11-29 at 1.32.09 PMToday, the dark day Syria shut down its Internet, web freedom should be at the very forefront of all of our minds. Web freedom was also center stage earlier this week when Stanford Law School hosted an event called "Sticky WCIT: Is This The End Of The Internet." I asked several of the experts attending the event whether a WCIT meeting next week in Dubai might be a big threat to the free flow of digital information.

Screen Shot 2012-11-29 at 2.54.21 PMGoogle has just posted research findings on how certain factors affect the launch of a smartphone, with data coming directly from search. According to author Matt Seitz, the senior analytical lead at the Google Agency Blog, searches predict smartphone sales "with over 90 percent correlation throughout the launch cycle." With this data, the search giant has uncovered the most important factors that determine whether or not a smartphone will launch into the arms of millions of adoring fans, or to an audience that either doesn't know the phone exists or simply doesn't care.

"In the Studio," Fortune's Dan Primack Dissects The State Of Venture Capital Top
Screen Shot 2012-11-25 at 1.37.52 PM"In the Studio" turns the corner into the winter months by welcoming a career finance journalist with a widely-read and often-cited daily email newsletter and, in my opinion, is the single best writer covering venture capital and private equity today. Fortune's Dan Primack has been covering the world of private equity and venture capital for over a decade. His work speaks for itself, with his daily "Term Sheet" email that reaches nearly everyone in both industries, and his willingness to share his opinions freely and dig and dig to get to the bottom of a story. Primack has a sort of "gumshoe leather" journalistic work ethic, and while he can certainly ruffle feathers (even the feathers of very powerful people) with his work, he has built a loyal following, over many years, that just continues to grow.

30M Users Strong, Kik Tries To Preserve Messaging Simplicity While Adding Features With Kik Cards Top
(TWO) 1-1 Convo_ YouTube ContentWaterloo-based mobile messaging app Kik, while immensely successful in its category, faced a problem: once you've nailed cross-platform messaging, and added group features, where do you go from there? Do too much, and you risk watering down the core product, the one that has helped Kik sign up over 30 million registered users who are coming on board at a rate of about 100,000 new user per day. Do too little, and you run the risk of becoming stagnant in an increasingly crowded marketplace.

iTunes — It Goes To 11. (In Design, If Not Performance.) Top
aYes, that headline. Obvious. But appropriate. Yes, after much delay (about a month), iTunes 11 is here today. And yes, it is one of the biggest overhauls of the media management service yet. Perhaps the biggest. And yes, it is now better positioned to compete in the era of the cloud. And yes, they even made the icon a bit better. It was back at the iPhone 5 event in September, when Apple first previewed the latest version of iTunes, pointing out many of the new/revised features on stage. But how does it hold up in terms of actual usage? Pretty good. Not perfect. But better than any of the previous versions of the software.

Evernote CrunchiesA year is a long time, especially in the technology world. I can't even remember what I was doing at this particular time last year without looking at my foursquare check-in history...sad, I know. I do know where I was in January, though -- at The Crunchies. I wasn't a part of TechCrunch yet. I attended as a guest while working for The Next Web. I wasn't sure what it was all about, so I definitely wanted to have a look. And I'm glad I did, because it was an experience that I'll cherish forever.
