Not To Be Outdone By Amazon, Google Reduces Its Cloud Storage Pricing For 2nd Time In A Week | Top |
This is competition at work: earlier this week, Google announced that it would reduce the price of its standard Google Cloud Storage by just a bit over 20%. Then, Amazon announced yesterday that it would reduce the price of its S3 cloud storage service by about 25% across the board. Today, in a somewhat surprising move, Google announced that it would reduce the price of Cloud Storage by yet another 10%, resulting in a total price reduction of over 30% once you include the earlier cut.

Parse.ly, the content optimization platform for publishers which emerged from stealth in January has been flying under the radar when it comes to press, but has growing the size of its customer base over the past year. The company recently signed one of its largest deals to date, having now added Thomson Reuters to its list of publishing customers, and says that it's now on track to profitability by early next year.

iTunes — It Goes To 11. (In Design, If Not Performance.) | Top |
Yes, that headline. Obvious. But appropriate. Yes, after much delay (about a month), iTunes 11 is here today. And yes, it is one of the biggest overhauls of the media management service yet. Perhaps the biggest. And yes, it is now better positioned to compete in the era of the cloud. And yes, they even made the icon a bit better. It was back at the iPhone 5 event in September, when Apple first previewed the latest version of iTunes, pointing out many of the new/revised features on stage. But how does it hold up in terms of actual usage? Pretty good. Not perfect. But better than any of the previous versions of the software.
Microsoft Finally Talks Surface Pro Pricing: 64GB For $899, 128GB For $999 | Top |
Microsoft's Windows RT-powered Surface has been… polarizing to say the least, leaving many a gadget fiend pondering the prospect of buying the more powerful Surface Pro instead. The Redmond-based company has been keeping quiet when it came to the Pro's more salient details, but Microsoft has finally come forward with some new info — the Surface Pro will be available in 64GB and 128GB models in January 2013, which will cost users $899 and $999 respectively.
Catch Up With Some Of Last Year's Big Crunchies Winners, More Tickets Available NOW | Top |
A year is a long time, especially in the technology world. I can't even remember what I was doing at this particular time last year without looking at my foursquare check-in history...sad, I know. I do know where I was in January, though -- at The Crunchies. I wasn't a part of TechCrunch yet. I attended as a guest while working for The Next Web. I wasn't sure what it was all about, so I definitely wanted to have a look. And I'm glad I did, because it was an experience that I'll cherish forever.
Top 5 New Features In iTunes 11: iCloud Integration, New Interface, Up Next, And More | Top |
Apple just released long-awaited iTunes 11. After downloading, users should expect a totally redesigned version. In October, the company said that there would be a one-month delay. Little has changed over the years, but today's new version represents a major milestone and a much needed simplification in some ways.

Apple Releases iTunes 11, A Major Redesign That Focuses On The Media And Quiets The Noise | Top |
Apple's iTunes 11 officially launched to the public today, after an unveiling in September at the iPhone 5 special announcement event. Originally planned for an October release, iTunes 11 required a little more time in the oven to bake. But it's understandable that this release took a little longer than expected: it's a significant change, one of the biggest since the introduction of iTunes.
LivingSocial Confirms Layoffs: 400, All But A Couple Dozen In The U.S., 10% Of Workforce | Top |
It's not only Groupon that is feeling the crunch among daily deal sites: LivingSocial is laying off 400 employees today. There were reports of the layoffs out yesterday from more than one source; the company confirmed the number to TechCrunch in an email just now. "I can confirm that we notified approximately 400 employees today -- all but a couple dozen in the United States -- that their positions are being eliminated," a spokesperson told me. "That's about 10% of our global workforce." The cuts come in sales, customer and merchant services, and the company's takeout/delivery service.

Republicans Give SOPA Architect Power Over Science Committee. Goodbye, Geek Supporters | Top |
Just when you think that Republicans are developing a respectable reputation on innovation, they nominate the most reviled policymaker in the technology industry to chair House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. Rep Lamar Smith (CrunchGov Grade: F), sponsor of the Stop Online Piracy Act, which sparked arguably the largest online public outcry in Internet history, will now oversee part of the budgetary process for NASA, FEMA, the FAA, Department of Energy the Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Science Foundation. While Washington insiders will rightly note that this new post on a relatively benign committee is, in fact, a demotion from his current (and much more powerful) chairmanship of the House Judiciary committee, let's count the ways this is a colossally bad public relations move.
SearchMan Gives Developers At-A-Glance Info About Their Apps' "Discoverability" With New Search Visibility Scores | Top |
The 500 Startups-backed app analytics firm SearchMan is debuting a new tool for mobile developers looking to quickly get a sense of how discoverable their application is inside App Store Search. This metric is more important than ever, following the changes to the iOS 6 App Store in September which have impacted developer rankings by removing or moving sections around and introducing a card-like interface to replace lists, among other things. The update also placed a greater emphasis on search and recommendations than ever before.
If You're A Restaurant Owner, PerfectMenu is Probably Perfect for Your Online Menu Needs | Top |
Writing about billion-dollar valuations and companies flush with cash is certainly fun, entertaining, and hopefully enlightening, but it's always fun to come across a teeny-tiny startup solving a small, but real problem for a clientele you know almost nothing about. No better example than PerfectMenu.com and its dead-simple solution that helps eateries get their menus online and easily maintain them.

Syria Shuts Down Internet In Midst Of Uprising, Mobile Services And Land Lines Partially Down | Top |
According to multiple Internet monitoring services, Syrian authorities have cut off access to the Internet. The news comes as an uprising has shaken the country for months, with an opposition trying to get together to face president and dictator Bashar al Assad. In the capital city Damascus, mobile services and land lines are affected as well.
Microsoft Trolls The Trolls In Latest IE10 Ad | Top |
The folks at Microsoft have just released a clever commercial for Internet Explorer 10, the latest version of the company's once dominant web browser which has seen great competition from Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox over the past few years. The ad puts you in the perspective of a true troll — dual-screens, a windowless room, old take-out boxes, and a penchant for spewing hate anonymously — and this troll hates IE10 (and Internet Explorer on the whole) with vehemence. Throughout the ad, you see this dude follow the news on IE10, like any good troll would. Each time Microsoft posts something good ("IE10 is now on Xbox 360" or "Gizmodo hearts IE10") our protagonist stands firm in his belief system, that IE10 has lost relevance.
